About Campaign

The BSG Plastic Collection Drive campaign is a part of BSG's ongoing 'Say NO to Plastic' initiative. 

In 2024, the plastic collection drive will be done exclusively in Mumbai.

This campaign aims to make a positive impact on our environment by addressing the issue of plastic pollution through urging the members of the community to adopt ‘Sustainable Human Behaviour’.

Through this campaign, we can safeguard our precious planet Earth from the detrimental impacts of plastic pollution by working together as a community. This effort is essential not only for our personal well-being but also to secure a healthier environment for generations to come.

The campaign will be driven at district level. Each member of the district to target to save at least 1 kg of plastic waste at their own home, and each district in Mumbai to target collection of minimum 25 kg of plastic waste.

This campaign includes six steps, also known as the SE-WA-STO-DE-CO-RE steps:

To take part in this campaign, every BSG district in Mumbai is encouraged to designate a District Plastic Coordinator (DPC) and each BSG Region of Mumbai is to identify one Region Plastic Coordinator (RPC).

Overall Timeline: August 9 to October 20, 2024
Between August 9 and October 13, 2024:

 
  1. Focus will be on the SE-WA-STO steps, that is, SEgregatingWAshing (wherever required), and STOring the plastic at one’s own home. 
  2. Until October 14, 2024, everyone will be keeping the collected plastic in their respective homes.
On October 14, 2024: 
  1. On this day, a launch meeting will be held in BSG Culture Centre to kick off the plastic collection drive.
Between October 15 to October 20, 2024:
  1. Focus will be on DE-CO-RE steps (DEpositing, COllection and REcycling).
  2. All participants will be DEpositing all the collected plastic at the district collection address.
  3. The collection address will be available in the BSG for SDG mobile app.
  4. The recycling van will arrive at the collection address to COllect the plastic and facilitate its onward journey for REcycling.

About District Plastic Coordinator (DPC)

  1. This DPC is the central point of contact for BSG Headquarters across all districts of Mumbai for the smooth coordination of BSG Plastic Collection Drive.
  2. The DPC can be any BSG member (YL/SD/YD/MD/WD) of the district.
  3. The DPC must ensure they have downloaded the ‘BSG for SDG’ mobile app on their phone and have created an account in the app as a BSG member.
  4. The DPC will get a certificate from BSG for taking lead in fighting the menace of plastic pollution in society by encouraging others to segregate their plastic waste at home, coordinating for collection of plastic waste, and sending the plastic waste for recycling from their district.
  5. The DPC who uploads the maximum quantity of plastic waste on the ‘BSG for SDG’ mobile app will lead their district to win the ‘Say NO to Plastic’ Championship Award!

Role of DPC

1. Providing a collection address 
  • DPC will provide a collection address in the BSG for SDG mobile app.
  • This could either be the DPC's personal address or any suitable location within the district’s geography.
  • This address will serve as the point of collection for the recycling van. 
  • The plastic will be deposited by all participants at this address between October 15 to 20, 2024 for collection by recycling vans.
  • The roster for the van's movement will be provided to the members minimum 1 day in advance. 
2. Adding details in the BSG for SDG mobile app:
  • DPC must add following details in the BSG for SDG mobile app latest by September 30, 2024:
  • Estimated weight of the plastic that the district is planning to collect from each member (in kg).
  • Estimated number of individuals who will be contributing to the plastic collection drive in that district (can include count of individuals from society too)
  • Pics / Videos of the plastic collected at the collection address.

3. Coordinating with BSG Headquarters:
  • Once the details have been entered by DPC in the app, this information will help make a route map for the recycling van to the different addresses between October 15 to 20, 2024.
4. Update the app once the plastic has been collected:
  • On the day that the van comes for collection, DPC will ensure that:
  • The collection van weighs the plastic that is being handed over to them.
  • Click pictures / record video and upload on the app.
  • Update the status of collection on the app from pending to collected.

Q1. Who can participate in this campaign?

A. The campaign is open to anyone willing to contribute. This includes both BSG members and non-members living in and around Mumbai.

Q2. What is meant by the segregation of plastic?

A. Segregation of plastic involves the process of separating plastic from any other waste items and storing this waste plastic separately to send it for recycling.

Q3. What kind of plastic can be sent for recycling through this campaign?

A. Any kind of plastic can be sent for recycling, excluding e-waste and glass materials. For example (including but not limited to):
  • Plastic beverage bottles
  • Plastic food containers
  • Plastic salad dressing bottles
  • Plastic milk jugs/packets (not tetra packs)
  • Plastic shampoo bottles/packets
  • Plastic lotion bottles
  • Plastic detergent containers/packets
  • Plastic masala, dal, sauce packets
  • Plastic biscuit and other confectionary wrappers
  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic food wraps
  • Plastic straws
  • Plastic cutlery: Single-use plastic forks, knives, spoon, cups etc
  • Plastic packaging of products

Q4. Is washing necessary for all types of plastic?

A. Washing is not a requirement for every type of plastic. Only plastics that are soiled, like shampoo/ conditioner/ moisturizer bottles/packets, sauces/ cooking oil/ lotion bottles/packets, and milk packets, need to be washed or cleaned.

Q5. What is the timeframe for the campaign?

A. Segregation of plastic at home will be between August 9 to October 14, 2024.
Depositing and Collection of plastic waste at the collection address will be between October 15 to 20, 2024.
 

Q6. Where should the plastic be stored?

A. Plastic should be stored in one’s own homes until October 14, 2024.

Q7. When should the plastic be deposited?

A. All plastic from one’s home can be deposited at the district's designated collection address between October 15 to 20, 2024. The exact date of when the plastic has to be deposited at the address will be provided by BSG HQ to the DPC, and by the DPC to all members of the district. This communication will be done 1 to 2 days prior to the date of collection.

Q8. How will the recycling vans be informed about plastic collection?

A. Based on the address and quantity of plastic entered by the DPC in the BSG for SDG mobile app, the BSG Headquarters will plan the route map of the recycling vans to cover all districts within the same geography. This will also ensure optimum utilization of fuel. The date on which the van will arrive at each collection center will be informed by BSG Headquarters to the DPC 1 to 2 days prior to the collection.

Q9. Can any other BSG member who is not a designated DPC enter the quantity of plastic in the app?

A. No, access to the app's data entry page will be provided exclusively to the DPC of each district.

Q10. Is appointing a DPC necessary?

A. Yes, appointing a DPC is essential as they will be responsible for overseeing plastic collection in the district, managing the app, and being the central point of contact for BSG Headquarters to ensure the smooth collection of the plastic by recycling vans.
