The World Environment Day calls for urgent action to revive our damaged ecosystems. It seeks to remind the impacts of ecosystem loss which is depriving the world of carbon sinks, i.e. forests and peatlands, at a time humanity can least afford it. Global greenhouse gas emissions have grown for 3 years in a row, and there is a potentially catastrophic climate change on the cards. Further, COVID-19 has also shown just how disastrous the consequences of ecosystem loss can be. The shrinking area of natural habitat for animals has created ideal conditions for pathogens including coronaviruses to spread.
