This Commission, along with the Economic and Social Council and the United Nations General Assembly, constitute a three-tiered intergovernmental mechanism which play the primary role in the implementation of the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development. The Commission, assisting the Council, monitors, reviews and assesses the implementation of the Programme of Action at the national, regional an d international levels and renders advice to the Council thereon. The Commission is composed of 47 Member States elected by the Economic and Social Council for a period of four years on the basis of geographic distribution.
