We use glass every day in our lives just as plastics. When left untreated, plastic can take thousands of years to decompose while nylon takes up to 30-40 years to decompose.
Glass, on the other hand, when left by itself, may take up to 1 million years to decompose in the environment.
However, unlike plastic and nylon, we can fully recycle glass without harming its quality and quantity and use it for thousands of years. The process of recycling glass requires less energy than the process of recycling plastic and nylon. In fact, recycling glass consumes lesser energy than making fresh glass products from melting fresh raw materials. Glass containers are not usually treated with chemicals for durability which makes them excellent for the recycling process.
If we all switch to recycled glass products and stop using plastic and nylon products, it will help us achieve SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), target # 12.5, that is, “By 2030, substantially reduce waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse.”
