Millennium Development Goals, or MDGs, are the predecessors to the SDGs. These are development goals that were set in 2000 by world leaders with the aim to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger; achieve universal primary education; promote gender equality and empower women; reduce child mortality; improve maternal health; combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases; ensure environmental sustainability; and build global partnerships for development. There were 8 MDGs that were established by the 191 member states of the United Nations in the year 2000, with a target date to achieve these MDGs by 2015. These 8 MDGs included:
i. To eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
ii. To achieve universal primary education
iii. To promote gender equality and empower women
iv. To reduce child mortality
v. To improve maternal health
vi. To combat HIV/AIDS, malaria, and other diseases
vii. To ensure environmental sustainability
viii. To develop a global partnership for development
